Hello & welcome to the Pucks portion of my website, featuring my Chicago Blackhawks puck collection. This collection is the result of 25 plus years of collecting & these pucks are not for sale, rather here as a visual reference for collectors & or for the casual Blackhawks fan to enjoy. This collection is constantly growing, so check back often to see my newest additions. The total number of hockey pucks in my collection is 196 & I believe this is one of the largest private collections of strictly, Chicago Blackhawks pucks in the world. Currently I am working on dating these pucks which involves much research, so bare with me as this is a work in progress. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments & or corrections. 1958 was the first year that NHL team's logos started to appear on hockey pucks, prior to that a generic puck had been used. The standard NHL puck is made of vulcanized rubber & is 1" thick & 3" in diameter and weighs 6oz. Every official NHL puck is frozen for 10 days prior to being used in a game, this makes the pucks slide better & bounce less. During a game, pucks can reach speeds of 100 miles per hour or more when struck, and are potentially dangerous to players and spectators. Puck-related injuries at hockey games are not uncommon & this led to the evolution of plexiglass panels sitting atop the boards of hockey rinks to protect spectators. These panels have also since been supplemented with mesh nets that extend above the upper edge of the plexiglass as well. In addition, various types of protective gear for players were implemented, most notably in 1959 goaltenders began wearing masks.
Speaking of goaltenders, Chicago Blackhawks goalie Tony Esposito is my all-time favorite player & several pucks in my collection feature this hockey legend. In addition to collecting Chicago Blackhawks Pucks, I also collect Tony Esposito memorabilia, including Tony Esposito related pucks. Esposito played with the Chicago Blackhawks from 1969-1984 & his retired number 35 hangs in the rafters of the United Center. During his rookie year, Tony had a spectacular season, posting a 2.17 GAA and setting a modern day NHL record with fifteen shutouts, for which he won the Calder Trophy as the Rookie Of The Year. He also took the Vezina Trophy and was named to the First All-Star team at season's end. It was during this record setting season he earned the nickname Tony 'O'. He was one of the pioneers of the now popular, "butterfly style" of goaltending & no one did this better. Esposito is the all-time Blackhawks career leader with 74 shutouts & finished his career as the all-time Blackhawks leader with 418 wins. Tony Esposito was inducted into the Hockey Hall Of Fame in 1988, & Tony's older brother Phil, also played for the Blackhawks from 1963-1967 & is in the Hockey Hall Of Fame as well. On March 19, 2008, the Chicago Blackhawks honored Esposito with "Tony Esposito Night", where he was formally introduced as an Ambassador to the Blackhawks organization.
